What is Deep Vein Thrombosis?

DVT is a blood clot that develops in a vein, usually in the lower limb. This could cause pain in the leg and slow down the blood circulation. As these clots develop in the size they can become fatal and can cause pulmonary embolism. DVT can be caused by a deep vein and is likely to occur because of age, past history, immobility, obesity, pregnancy and long air, road or rail journey.

Treatment: DVT treatment aims to prevent a blood clot from becoming bigger as well as preventing new clots from developing.

What are anti-embolism stockings?

Anti-embolism stockings are designed specifically for bed bound patients to help prevent blood from pooling in the veins of the legs. Pooling of blood in the veins of the legs may lead to blood clots forming in the veins. Anti-embolism stockings are used when the patients is bedridden at the hospital. They help to increase the blood velocity and prevent blood clots

Benefits of use

  • Provide therapeutic compression to increase blood flow velocity and promotes venous return

  • The blending of yarns permits these stockings to be soft and thin. They can be used for a prolonged period.

Indications:

  • Chronic peripheral venous insufficiency
  • Mild edema of the leg
  • Patients who require improved blood circulation

 Precautions:

  • Remember to wear these under the advice of a qualified doctor
  • As these stockings are a seamless knitted fabric, proper care will enhance the lifespan of the fabric
  • While applying please do not pull in an uneven manner. Slide the stockings over the toe and first set the ribbed knitting on the heel area
  • Then slightly pull up to the knee and set the ribbed knitting on the knee area. Then slightly pull above the knee onto the thigh
  • Do not apply any ointment on the skin when you wish to wear the stocking
  • If difficulty in pulling the stockings for obese patients, apply slight talcum powder on the skin for ease of pulling the stockings
